The new Patek Philippe 5980/60G Nautilus that made its debut earlier this year in Geneva is one of those watch releases where at first, everyone is rather unsure of what to think about this new denim-like fabrication Patek is introducing, and now, it’s grown on everyone and once again, another Patek hot commodity. And candidly, I am still patiently waiting for the first time I see this highly-coveted timepiece out in the wild.
This Nautilus self-winding flyback chronograph, the 5980/60G, is crafted in white gold, featuring an opaline blue-gray dial. Complementing this refined dial is a blue-gray denim-patterned calfskin strap, secured with a white gold Nautilus fold-over clasp. For added versatility, the watch also comes with an additional blue-gray composite material strap with the aforementioned denim fabric pattern.
The Nautilus 5980/60G is characterized by its impeccable craftsmanship, showcasing contrasting polished and satin finishes on the case and bezel. This intricate detailing enhances the watch’s visual appeal and highlights its luxurious nature. The case measures 40.5 mm in diameter (from 10 to 4 o’clock) and has a thickness of 12.2 mm, ensuring a comfortable and stylish fit on the wrist. The watch is water-resistant up to 30 meters and features a screw-down crown and a sapphire crystal case back, allowing a clear view of the intricate movement within.
The chronograph functionality of the Nautilus 5980/60G is both innovative and practical with the chronograph indications are neatly arranged in a large 6 o’clock monocounter with three concentric scales, providing a clear and legible display. The central chronograph seconds hand doubles as a running seconds display, adding to the watch’s versatility.
At the heart of the Nautilus 5980/60G lies the self-winding mechanical movement, Caliber CH 28-520 C/522. This flyback chronograph movement is renowned for its precision and reliability, featuring a central chronograph hand, a 60-minute and 12-hour monocounter, and a date display in an aperture. The combination of these elements ensures that the watch is not only a beautiful accessory but also a highly functional timekeeping instrument.
The opaline blue-gray dial of the Nautilus 5980/60G is horizontally embossed and adorned with white gold applied hour markers coated with white luminescent material, ensuring excellent readability in all lighting conditions. This unique dial design enhances the watch’s overall aesthetic, making it a true standout piece.
The Nautilus 5980/60G comes originally fitted with a hand-stitched, denim-patterned calfskin strap in blue-gray, which perfectly complements the dial. For those who prefer a different look, an additional blue-gray composite material strap with a fabric pattern is included. Both straps feature the signature Nautilus fold-over clasp in white gold, ensuring a secure and comfortable fit.
