Top 5 Wedding Watches
Picking which watch to wear on your wedding day is a very hard task. A couple of weeks ago, Giorgia Mondani hopefuly made it a little easier when she explained how she did it. Since you adored her article, we thought we’d take a look at five wedding watches from five very different brands.
Breguet
It’s a longstanding wedding tradition that the married couple wears something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue on their special day. The Breguet 7077 La Tradition Chronograph Indépendant comes close to ticking all those boxes. Presented in an 18-carat white gold case, this 2015 novelty borrows many of Breguet’s signatures, including iconic open-tipped blue hands to indicate the hours and minutes within an 18-carat gold subdial at 12 o’clock.
For her, consider the Reine de Naples Day/Night. Named after the younger sister of Napoleon, Caroline Murat, who reigned as the Queen of Naples from 1808 to 1815, this timepiece features a bezel, dial flange and crown all set with diamonds. The 18K gold, silvered and engine-turned dial features flame and barleycorn patterns, with hours and minutes on the lower dial and a day/night indicator on the upper dial.
Audemars Piguet
Audemars Piguet has the perfect wedding gift for watch collectors. Earlier this year, the Swiss brand introduced his and hers Royal Oak watches. There’s no blue in this two-tone though. ‘Only’ steel and pink gold. Housed in the iconic octagonal Royal Oak case, the new watches feature the traditional Grand Tapisserie dial in white.
While pink gold and steel may seem a mismatch to AP’s youthful collector-base, the brand is betting on the power of nostalgia, and the ever growing curiosity of that generation to dive deep into Audemars Piguet’s rich past. For women, Audemars Piguet launched a Quartz Calibre 2713 powered model featuring 40 brilliant-cut diamonds on the bezel.
Rolex
While some collectors – such as Giorgia Mondani’s husband – would prefer to go with a vintage sports Rolex, the Cellini Time remains the standard-bearer of dress watches at Rolex. Hours, minutes and seconds capture the moment, as the vintage-inspired sword hands swoop around the Cellini’s timeless design. And what moment is more important than the one that begins and ends with ‘Yes.’ The new Cellini Time borrows the icon’s bezel with very finely fluted outer ring, but this time it is set with 62 larger diamonds.
In the women’s collection, Rolex introduced the latest generation of its Oyster Perpetual Lady-Datejust line. The new model features a redesigned case enlarged to 28 mm, as well as gem-set hour markers and large roman numerals at 9 o’clock to provide more balance to the new dials.
Patek
If you’re going to get married once, better do it the right way. An icon, the Patek Philippe Nautilus received a total makeover this year for Baselworld. The Nautilus 5711 comes updated with a beautifully warm rose gold case and bracelet and yummy chocolate brown guilloche dial with horizontal lines that provide superb reflections. A small detail which newly married men will appreciate is the new gold ring around the date. Best not to forget it now that you’ll be celebrating it for the rest of your married life.
While Patek Philippe did not follow Audemars Piguet’s example, and unveil a his and hers Nautilus watch in the same year, the new 5711 can still be coupled with the Ladies Automatic Ref 7118. Its diamond bezel is sure to highlight that – other – piece of jewelry everyone is making a fuss about on their wedding day.
JLC Reverso
There’s no space for hesitation on the big day, and no turning back after it. However, if you’re looking for a classic dress watch, you can’t go wrong with the Jaeger-LeCoultre reverso. Especially this Grande Reverso Night & Day which. Made in steel, it will capture every single one of the first 24 hours spent with your wife.
If you’re commiting to him, why not commit to his watch too. Jaeger-Lecoultre has just released a very special reverso for women this year. The mid-sized Reverso Classic Medium Duetto is, for the very first time, equipped with an automatic movement, which means you don’t need to risk your perfectly manicured fingernails re-winding this watch on your wedding day. Made in a rose gold case, its particulalry fitting if your wedding band is made of the same material.
