Richard Mille is a brand that has always strived to push the art of watchmaking forward, and with 2010’s RM 022 Tourbillon Aerodyne Dual Time, the independent watchmaker managed to incorporate aerospace engineering into a finely crafted luxury timepiece. The RM 022 took the honeycomb-patterned orthorhombic titanium aluminide alloy, originally developed for the wings of supersonic aircraft, and used it to add strength and torsional resistance to the tourbillon. The aircraft aesthetic also informed the body of the watch, with the shape of the RM 022’s baseplate taking inspiration from V-shaped wings.

Now the newly announced RM 022 Tourbillon Aerodyne Dual Time Black Carbon takes aerospace inspiration into the stratosphere. This new edition of the RM 022 features a tripartite case crafted from NTPT® (North Thin Ply Technology) carbon, a material currently used in the manufacture of racing sails, Formula 1 race cars and aerospace technology. NTPT carbon is extremely strong and light, and constructed with multiple layers of parallel filaments created from dividing carbon fibers. These fibers are then filled with resin and woven on a special machine that results in a product that’s incredibly strong and rigid, but also totally unique on a visual level. The weaving process ensures that every timepiece is a totally unique product.

The Richard Mille RM 022 Tourbillon Aerodyne Dual Time Black Carbon runs in a limited edition of 10 pieces and will be available at American Richard Mille boutiques in Beverly Hills and Las Vegas. The piece will also be available at the soon to be open boutique in Bal Harbour, Florida.

The Richard Mille RM 022 Tourbillon Aerodyne Dual Time Black Carbon will retail for $480,000.
