Watch of the Week: Hublot Spirit Of Big Bang Sapphire
That the shape of the case of a watch can change the way you see and experience it becomes evident when you take a look at Hublot’s Spirit of Big Bang Sapphire. In many ways, it is very similar to the Big Bang Sapphire models, but at the same time, it is not.
With its tonneau shaped case, it provides a completely different experience when you put it on. I probably should put a disclaimer in here by now, as I am personally really taken by tonneau shaped cases. They have a prominent wrist presence without being cumbersome to wear, and although this Spirit of Big Bang Sapphire is about as avant-garde as a watch can get, it still gives the watch a more timeless, classic appearance.
Hublot played not only with materials and textures with this watch, but also with shapes. This becomes especially clear (no pun intended) when we examine the back of the watch, where the round movement is beautifully integrated into the tonneau shaped case, creating a symbiosis in design through contrast.
Of course, the sapphire case is what this watch is all about. It is a material of which Hublot is one of the few brands that can honestly say that they have mastered them. Not only because they can make them in different colors, but also because they can make them in a tonneau shape. Although it looks rather straight forward, making a tonneau shaped case is difficult, especially in sapphire. Yet Hublot has mastered this challenging process to such an extent that they can make this Spirit Of Big Bang Sapphire even in a limited edition of 250 pieces! Yes, this is indeed one of the very few watches were making more of them actually is a far greater accomplishment than making less of them
