Hublot Big Bang Unico Golf; A Hole In One Even When You Don’t Play Golf
Can a watch have an appeal beyond those who play the sport that it was so specifically designed for? In the case of the Hublot Big Bang Unico Golf, this can be answered with a clear yes. This is quite unusual as the complication that this watch is fitted with is very specific and of little use when not on the green. However, the impact that this complication has on the overall design is what makes this watch so tempting to a much larger group of watch connoisseurs, and proves its worth also off the golf course.
Part of this appeal can be explained by the materials that Hublot selected to craft the watch out of. The case and bezel are made from carbon fiber with a Texalium upper layer. This material gives the watch a unique appearance, and the texture of it shows a lot of play of light. Another prominent feature are the buttons, which amplify the special character of the watch. The ones on the right allow you to select the hole and the number of shots needed to complete it. They are automatically added, and the total amount of shots is displayed at six o’clock. A button at seven o’clock can be pushed to reset them all in case you want to start a new game.
Initially did Hublot offer the watch in grey Texalium when it was introduced in 2017, but this year they also added a version in blue Texalium to the collection. Wearing comfort was one of the most important criteria when developing the watch. Therefor are the buttons on, especially on the right side of the watch rounded and kept close to the case. As Hublot is using ultra-light materials, the weight of the entire watch is not even one hundred grams. Both versions are powered by caliber MHUB1580, which is an automatic movement that offers a power reserve of 72-hours. Another remarkable feature of this watch is that it is water-resistant up to 10 ATM/100 meters. This also establishes the Big Bang Unico Golf as a bonafide sports watch that can quite easily also be worn when practicing demanding sports other than golf.
As is always the case with Hublot, is there a lot of attention paid to the details, in particular, those of the strap. The brand opted for a rubber base, which they combine with calf-skin in a design that is similar to that of a golf glove. All these elements combined give the Big Bang Unico Golf a unique position within the Hublot collection and offer a tempting proposition for both (professional) golf players and watch connoisseurs who are looking to add a watch with character and a unique complication to their collection.
