Haute Auto: The 2016 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT S

Haute Auto: The 2016 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT S

Haute Auto Mercedes Benz AMG GT S

Fire up the AMG GT S engine, and soon your ears will be burning to the sweet sound of its V-8 engine. That’s right—there’s a new shooter in town, and it’s gunning for the Porsche 911.

The stats are impressive: 503 horses, 479 pounds of twist from a four-liter, twin- turbo V-8 running through a seven-speed, auto-shift manual transmission. But, the numbers don’t tell the whole story of what happens to this 3,600-pound car when you mash the go-pedal. I must say, for a car with rear-wheel drive (such a throwback), it is fantastic in the rubber- meets-the-road experience. Given the car’s size and with the power driving only two wheels, a zero to 60mph time of 3.7 seconds (some quote it at 3.5) is astounding. And, lest you think that some special low gearing gives it that lightning flash, note that the top speed is 193mph. The car is so quick that the 2016 model arrived several months ahead of New Year’s Eve.

The base price for all this fun is $129,900, but don’t expect to see any with that sticker—and what fun would that be, anyway? “Nicely appointed” (as they say), the car will run in the $150,000-range and beyond, as “mine” did, since it was equipped with special paint, wheels, interior, a terrific, high- end sound system and some other upgrades.

It’s one of the nicest two-seaters out there, so if power, performance and looks are on your shopping list, the AMG GT S is your next ride.
