In 1967, a legend was born in the form of a watch that would not only shape the future of Grand Seiko but also establish a unique design language that would stand the test of time. Known as the 44GS, this iconic timepiece embodied nine distinct design elements, defining what we now know as the Grand Seiko Style.

Fast forward to 2023, and Grand Seiko pays homage to the enduring legacy of the 44GS with the launch of three exclusive creations tailored specifically for the U.S. market. These timepieces feature midsize cases introduced last year, bringing a perfect blend of tradition and innovation. What sets these watches apart is their dials, adorned with Grand Seiko’s signature Mt. Iwate pattern, aptly named after the majestic peak visible from the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi windows.

The first of these exclusive creations, the SBGW313, draws inspiration from “hanami,” the cherished tradition of cherry blossom viewing. The enchanting pink dial of the SBGW313 captures the fleeting beauty of blooming sakura trees. Situated in the northern region of Japan, Iwate offers a unique opportunity to witness the splendor of cherry trees in full bloom later in the spring season, set against the backdrop of a snow-capped Mt. Iwate.

Next up is the SBGW311, which takes its inspiration from “tsuyu,” the rainy season that graces Japan in early summer. The lush green hue of the SBGW311’s dial mirrors the fertile landscapes surrounding Mt. Iwate.

Finally, the SBGW309, an exclusive model available only to members of the U.S. GS9 Club, features a cool blue dial reminiscent of wind-blown, ice-covered trees. These trees, transformed into magnificent shapes known as “snow monsters” or “juhyo” in Japanese, can be spotted from Mt. Iwate on the neighboring Mt. Hachimantai, creating a mesmerizing winter wonderland in Iwate Prefecture.

Inside each of these timepieces’ 36.5 mm x 11.67 mm stainless steel cases lies the manual-winding caliber 9S64, boasting an impressive 72-hour power reserve and remarkable accuracy of +5 to -3 seconds per day (when static). The crystal of each watch is reminiscent of the 1967 model, boasting a box-shaped design. However, it is crafted from sapphire crystal and features an anti-reflective coating on the inside surface.

With a retail price of $5,900, the new SBGW311 and SBGW313 models are available for purchase as of November 2023 at Grand Seiko boutiques, Grand Seiko boutique online, and Grand Seiko authorized retailers. As for the SBGW309, it will be an exclusive delight for GS9 Club members, accessible through Grand Seiko boutique online and Grand Seiko GS9 Club events.
