Grand Seiko has just released two new USA-exclusive limited editions, the SBGA507 and SBGA509, limited to just 300 pieces each. These timepieces are more than just watches; they are a tribute to the exquisite Japanese art of ukiyo-e and the serene beauty of Lake Suwa’s transitioning sky, captured through the lens of horological craftsmanship.

Grand Seiko’s 2018 formation of the Grand Seiko Corporation of America was marked by the introduction of limited edition models inspired by kirazuri. This traditional technique, which translates to “sparkling painting,” is used in ukiyo-e woodblock prints to create a shimmering effect, often with mica powder. The SBGA507 and SBGA509 continue this artistic legacy, with their dials reflecting a delicate sparkle akin to the kirazuri technique. The textured dials not only pay homage to this historic art form but also highlight the brand’s dedication to integrating cultural elements into their designs.

The dials of these new models draw inspiration from the transitioning skies over Lake Suwa, a common motif in ukiyo-e art and a site close to where Grand Seiko’s Spring Drive movements are crafted. The SBGA509 features a dusty rose dial, reminiscent of the early sunrise, while the SBGA507 boasts a cool blue dial, echoing the serene evening sky. These colors are not just aesthetic choices; they symbolize the natural beauty and tranquility of the area, creating a visual and emotional connection to the watches.

At the core of these limited editions lies the Spring Drive Automatic Caliber 9R65, a movement that celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2024. Known for its precision, the Caliber 9R65 integrates mechanical, electrical, and electromagnetic energy through the Tri-Synchro Regulator, achieving an impressive accuracy of ±15 seconds per month. This level of precision, combined with a 72-hour power reserve, underscores Grand Seiko’s commitment to innovation and excellence in watchmaking.

The SBGA507 and SBGA509 are housed in stainless steel cases, a modern reinterpretation of the iconic 44GS case design established in 1967. This design laid the foundation for the Grand Seiko Style, characterized by nine distinct principles that define the brand’s aesthetic. The cases are paired with stainless steel bracelets, featuring three-fold clasps and push-button releases, ensuring both comfort and security.
