When I started last year with 'Blue Dials of Baselworld' I did not expect it to become a reoccurring topic. Earlier this year at the SIHH, we already saw enough blue dials to warrant a similar article and this year at Baselworld....well, judge for yourself!

Last year after Baselworld I wrote an article about the many beautiful blue dials that caught my eye. This trend continues to live on, as also at this years SIHH, there where blue dials galore, including some very special one!

Surprised that you missed a Hublot in our line-up of our favorite new watches of 2017? Well, it is not that we didn't have any, it was more the case that we had too many! Many brands only focus on the big watch fairs early in the year to release their novelties, but for Hublot, innovation is a constant factor, so they do it throughout the year. 2017 was once more an exceptional year for Hublot, so after a long debate, these are our favorites!

2017 was a good year when it comes to watches. As we already discovered a few of Haute Time's favorite watches of this year in Part I, there were simply too many to put all in one article. That's, why in part II we showcase a few other favorites that have been released this year!

When the new year is coming closer people tend to look back at what the current year has brought them. During the course of the year, the tide turned, and many brands enjoyed, once more, increased sales. This was in part due to some incredible new models that were introduced, which worked up an appetite with watch collectors and connoisseurs. At Haute Time we also look back, with our favorite watches of 2017!

How can you upgrade a watch that is already a horological masterpiece? Set them with diamonds! This by itself is a form of art, as nothing is so complicated as setting a three dimensional, functional, object like a watch with diamonds. It often takes weeks, if not months, to make them, not only the movement but also to complete the diamond setting. The result is spectacular! Meet the world's most exclusive and expensive diamond set watches!

Among other complications, the power reserve indicator always seems to be a bit dull. You do not have the continuous motion of a tourbillon, the playfulness of a chronograph, or the imposing look of a big date. However, many watch connoisseurs have a secret, or not so secret, crush on this complication. Where there was a time when a 48-hour power reserve was the most of it, now even the most common watches sport five days or more, and some might only take winding once a month. That gives the power reserve indicator a whole new level of excitement, especially since many brands now also display it in a far more creative way!

Granted, these skeletons are not very scary, so that might make them even more perfect for your closet because they will complement a large range of outfits. Skeleton watches have always been quite a challenge to make, as you cut away what a watch so desperately needs: the stability of the main plate and bridges. That makes skeleton watches almost like a walk on the high wire for watchmakers, and so enticing for the rest of us!

With the passing of Roger Dubuis, we lost somebody who has been a big influence on the world of the Haute Horlogerie. While the master himself was not as involved in the company that bears his name as in the past, in part due to the sale to Richemont in 2008, the foundation of complicated avant-garde watches is safely guarded in the DNA of the brand. With a brand like Roger Dubuis, which has so many incredible watches in its collection, it is hard to call favorites, but fun for sure!

We are currently in an era in watchmaking in which there is significant innovation regarding the materials of which watch cases are made. Sapphire, scratch resistant gold, carbon fibers, and high tech plastics now play a significant role in the world of Haute Horlogerie, but surprisingly also a more ancient alloy: Bronze.
