Ahead of the Watches & Wonders’ Palexpo doors opening tomorrow, Bulgari brings us some rather exciting news: The Octo Finissimo Ultra has once again shattered the confines of high-end mechanical watchmaking by setting a new world standard for slimness. Two years ago in Geneva, Bulgari battled it out, setting the 2022 record (against Piaget) with a record thickness of 1.89mm. And today, Bulgari returns to Geneva triumphant once again.
With its unparalleled thickness of just 1.70 millimeters, this timepiece is a testament to Bulgari’s bold innovation and relentless pursuit of breaking new ground. This ninth-world record holder is not only the thinnest mechanical watch in existence but also boasts the title of the world’s slimmest COSC chronometer, merging the pinnacle of precision with groundbreaking design.
To achieve this, it required a complete reimagining of mechanical watch design, balancing extreme slimness with the durability necessary to withstand shocks and magnetic fields. Bulgari’s collaboration with Concepto, a leader in complex mechanisms, and its own R&D department, pushed beyond previous limits, inspired by the belief that the boundaries of watchmaking are meant to be exceeded.
This COSC-certified achievement is not merely about technical prowess but also about Bulgari’s dedication to the art of the extraordinary. The Octo Finissimo Ultra COSC’s case back doubles as the mainplate, a foundation for the 170 meticulously assembled components of the manually wound BVL180 manufacture caliber. This design not only demonstrates Bulgari’s commitment to precision but also to the elegant integration of form and function, where even the case back/mainplate material is chosen for its density and resilience.
Furthermore, the Octo Finissimo Ultra COSC enhances its functionality with a large barrel ensuring a 50-hour power reserve and an escapement that maximizes the watch’s spatial design. The introduction of a miniaturized Datamatrix, which holds a wealth of data about the watch, invites owners into the Bulgari universe, providing insight into the craftsmanship and innovation that define the Octo Finissimo Ultra COSC.
Bulgari also redefines the experience of setting and winding with a dedicated case for the Octo Finissimo Ultra COSC, incorporating a digital display for effortless precision. Limited to 20 pieces, this watch is a beacon of mechanical ingenuity and the embodiment of Bulgari’s ethos: to continually push the limits of watchmaking in the pursuit of unmatched reliability, performance, and elegance.
Expanding the Finissimo collection’s legacy, the Octo Finissimo Ultra Platinum emerges as a symbol of luxury and innovation. Opting for 950 platinum, known for its challenging workability, Bulgari showcases its mastery over materials and design — available in a limited edition of 20 pieces.
And because it’s Watches & Wonders 2024, this isn’t even all for Bulgari. Keep scrolling to discover the other latest novelties for the brand this year.
The collaboration between Tadao Ando and Bulgari on the Serpenti Tubogas collection introduces a series of limited edition watches that embody the transient beauty of nature through the seasons. Each edition, crafted with meticulous attention to detail and enriched with natural symbolism, showcases the harmonious blend of Ando’s architectural principles and Bulgari’s iconic serpenti design, transforming with the seasons in a celebration of time and renewal.
Bulgari continues to redefine the landscape of Haute Horlogerie with its Octo collection, pushing the boundaries of extreme finesse and the tourbillon in several innovative Octo Finissimo Tourbillon models. These new pieces, including the manual rose gold version with its ultra-slim 1.95 mm movement and the titanium model with contrasting rose gold hands, showcase the brand’s mastery of blending technical prowess with aesthetic audacity. The Octo Finissimo Tourbillon Automatic, with its automatic BVL 288 caliber and platinum case, further exemplifies Bulgari’s commitment to continuous innovation, transforming each timepiece into a dynamic artwork that reimagines the very essence of timekeeping.
Bulgari introduces two sophisticated new additions to the Octo Roma collection, a three-hand model and a chronograph, both featuring a bold, modern design in 100% black DLC steel, showcasing a multifaceted and unconventional vision that deepens the collection’s allure. These timepieces exemplify the brand’s philosophy that black transcends mere absence of color, enriching shapes, materials, and textures with depth and intensity, as inspired by Pierre Soulages’ Outrenoir concept, thereby offering a canvas that highlights the unique aesthetic of each watch. The Octo Roma’s legacy is further enriched by these models, combining the iconic octagonal design inspired by Roman architecture with the contemporary flair of Swiss watchmaking and Italian design, featuring interchangeable straps and in-house movements, these pieces embody Bulgari’s prowess in crafting watches that are both technically sophisticated and aesthetically compelling.
