Breguet was in Belgium last week to honor the bicentenary of the Battle of Waterloo. The Swiss brand officiated the opening of the Hougoumont Farm, a key site from the battle, from which the Duke of Wellington inflicted a severe defeat onto Napoleon and his men in June 1815.

If they were opposed in battle, both men expressed a well-documented interest in Breguet’s timepieces, and the brand has played a vital role, investing € 500,000 euros in the restoration of the Hougoumont Farm into a museum.

Breguet therefore breaks away from the current trend of making a highly limited commemorative watch, choosing instead to honor one of Europe’s most infamous conflicts with a long-term commitment.

Marc A. Hayek, President & CEO of Breguet, joined members of European royalty, leading politicians and the international press in the inauguration of this important piece of history, and the ceremony ended with a symbolic handshake between the current Duke of Wellington, Prince Blücher von Wahlstatt and Prince Charles Bonaparte.

A series of lectures entitled Breguet in the Heart of Europe are currently being curated by Baron Bernard Snoy, President of the Waterloo Committee, to shed some light on the extraordinary links between Breguet and the Hougoumont Farm.
