In the world of watches, not all creations are equal. Some are just more important than others because, like any other industry, market share and profitability play an essential role. With a few exceptions, this is usually not achieved with very highly complicated, limited edition, pieces but more with a strong base collection. Zenith is strengthening theirs with the introduction of the Defy Skyline.

1969 is one of the most important years in the history of Zenith, as the brand not only launched their famed El Primero but also introduced the very first Defy. This collection would grow to become one of the pillars for the brand, which it still is today. To mark this momentous beginning, Zenith is launching the Defy Revival A3642, a watch with a distinct vintage flair and a generous dose of character.

It is rare that a watch brand partners with a Japanese Manga and anime series, but when it happens, it can result in a timepiece unlike any other. Lupin The Third is an institution in the world of Manga, with the very first edition being published in 1967. Shortly after the launch of the original El Primero in 1969, it appeared on the wrist of Daisuke Jigen, the partner in crime of the main character Arsène Lupin III. It featured a black, grey, and gilt dial Zenith had never produced, but a bond was formed between the watch brand and the Magna series. This was strengthened even more in the final episode of the first series, with Jigen wearing a "panda" dial version of the watch.

It is an interesting question to ask; when does Zenith reach its zenith? So far, it hasn't happened yet, and it is doubtful that it will happen in the near future. Today the brand launches two watches that give a new spin on already existing creations. What they have in common are mouthwatering movements encased in transparency and spiced up with a generous dash of blue.

Only Watch has always been a charity with a unique approach. They fund research to find a cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy by organizing a biennial auction for which the world's leading watch manufacturers donate a piece unique. This weekend, Christie's auctioned the 53 creations in a packed Palexpo in Geneva, raising CHF 30 million, over 32 million US dollars.

It was an exciting time in Geneva last night, as the winners of this year's Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) were announced. In a spectacular show, the entire watch world held its breath as it became clear which watches and brands would go home with a prize.

When done well, diamonds on a watch add more than just to the price tag. This is a delicate exercise that is not that easy to accomplish. It is all about finding the right balance and incorporate the precious stones in such a way that they elevate the watch as a whole and create synergy with its design. With the new Chronomaster Orginal, Zenith is giving a master class on how to achieve this. What is most interesting is that they only need sixty-five brilliant-cut stones to make a dazzling display. Fifty-six are used for the lugs, with an additional nine as hour markers on the dial. They seem like details, but the impact is profound.

One of the most popular complications is the chronograph. This can be explained because the complication adds extra dynamic elements to the watch. Measuring the passing of time requires an extra seconds hand, subdials to show the minutes and hours, and pushers to operate it all. Aviation, car racing, and the exploration of space are just three areas in which (mechanical) chronographs made their mark, adding to their appeal. When you say Zenith to a watch enthusiast, he or she cannot help but immediately think of El Primero. This automatic chronograph movement was groundbreaking when launched in 1969, but as Zenith has continued developing it, it is still as enticing today. Because of that is has become one of the gold standards for chronograph movements. It was even for years good enough for Rolex to power its iconic Daytona before they developed a chronograph movement of its own. Earlier this year, Zenith launched the new Chronomaster Sport, a watch that seems to go head-to-head with exactly the Daytona. Until now, it was only available in stainless steel, but that changes with the launch of the pink gold model.

With the launch of the new Defy, Zenith is taking this collection into the extreme, and quite literally so. As founding partner and official timekeeper of Extreme E, they are sending their watches off the grid. This new and exciting off-road championship will challenge both the drivers as well as their machines but also adds something unique into the mix, as all the cars are electric.

After the Defy 21 Ultraviolet, which Zenith introduced last year, the brand is continuing its quest for vibrant colors with the new Defy 21 Ultrablue. This combines in an exciting way past and present, as blue also played an important role in the history of the El Primero. When launched in 1969, it was also this color that underscored how unique that watch was. When we fast forward to 2021, that hasn't changed a bit.

Can a watch be everything at the same time? Zenith is making a plausible case that it can, with the new Defy 21 Urban Jungle. For the brand, this model proves to be a versatile canvas that can be lavishly decorated with gemstones, like the previously released Pink Edition, or be down to earth like the Land Rover Limited Edition. Two things that even the more extreme watches in the collection share are their superb performance and strong Zenith-DNA.
