As one of the most highly anticipated car shows in the world came to an end, an intense competition for the Best of Show ribbon was one of the highlights at the 2018 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance as part of Monterey Car Week. Competitors came from all over the globe, but it was the 1937 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Touring Berlinetta that took home the highly coveted award and recognition.

“As a Zagato collector, I broke the rules and bought a Touring-bodied car because this Alfa Romeo is very special,” said longtime entrant David Sydorick of Beverly Hills, California. “It is a piece of automotive architecture mounted on a Grand Prix chassis that has technology that was top of the line for prewar cars. It’s a wonderful combination. It’s beautiful from top to bottom.”

In addition to winning the top award, Sydorick’s Alfa Romeo also won the Charles A. Chayne Trophy, as well as the J. B. & Dorothy Nethercutt Most Elegant Closed Car. With a more “steeply raked grille and lack of running boards,” this Alfa Romeo is differentiated from later 8Cs, and since Sydorick’s full restoration of the vehicle, it has completely restored its 1938 Berlin Motor Show specification. Two other contenders came close to Best of Show: Lehrman Collection of Palm Beach, Florida’s 1929 Duisenberg J Murphy Town Limousine and Robert Kudela‘s (from Chropyne, Czech Republic) 1948 Talbot-Lago T26 Grand Sport Figoni Fastback Coupé.

“This Alfa Romeo 8C 2.9 has all that one would wish for in a car—speed, style and, frankly, sex appeal,” began Concours Chairman Sandra Button. “The Touring styling is simply magical, and to top it off it makes all the right noises!”

In addition to garnering 209 cars this year from 17 different countries and 31 different states on the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links, the Concours raised an impressive $1.8 million for charity—The Pebble Beach Company Foundation. Via the foundation, the funds raised will go to over 80 local charities, providing assistance to over 10,000 children annualy in Monterey County.
