Watch of the Week: The New Ulysse Nardin Freak ONE OPS
We’ve said it before, and we will say it again: 2023 has been the year of the Freak for Ulysse Nardin.
As we look back on the past year, beginning with Watches & Wonders where Ulysse Nardin unveiled the Freak ONE as its solo novelty to the Freak X OPS in September to now the latest addition at Dubai Watch Week, the Freak ONE OPS, there’s no doubt Ulysse Nardin had a clear message for the year. Over the past two decades, the Freak has evolved into an icon of contemporary high-end watchmaking. It pioneered technologies, notably the use of high-tech silicon to reduce stress on crucial moving parts, that have since become industry standards. Although the Freak initially ventured outside the comfort zone of traditional Swiss watchmaking, its unconventional spirit has been a catalyst for change, inspiring others to follow suit. Early models of the Freak have garnered a dedicated following among collectors, while subsequent iterations have pushed the boundaries of its technical capabilities and aesthetics. Among them, the Freak ONE has remained a centerpiece of the collection, embodying the independent and free-spirited ethos that defines both the Freak and Ulysse Nardin.
In the latest chapter in the Freak story, the Freak ONE OPS — where OPS stands for “operations” — the Freak’s legacy is taken to new heights with a khaki and black color scheme, exuding an adventurous spirit. It’s underpinned by cutting-edge technology developed in Ulysse Nardin’s integrated manufacture, all while embracing a more casual look.
One of the standout features of the Freak ONE OPS is its material composition. The watch case, constructed from black DLC titanium, is paired with a bezel made of Carbonium®, an innovative material known for its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio. Carbonium® is produced using carbon fibers similar to those found in advanced aircraft wings and fuselages, with the added benefit of reducing environmental impact by 40% compared to other carbon composites. The manufacturing process yields a marbled finish on each bezel, making every Freak ONE OPS unique.
In keeping with the Freak’s tradition of revealing its inner workings, the caliber UN-240 Manufacture movement is on full display. Its flying carousel serves as the minutes indicator, while the oversized oscillator and balance spring, both made from captivating blue silicon, continue to highlight the pivotal role of silicon in the Freak’s unconventional legacy. The movement is self-winding and boasts an impressive 90-hour power reserve.
Additionally, the Freak ONE OPS offers a choice of two integrated straps: one in black and khaki “ballistic” rubber and another two-tone rubber strap in black and khaki. These straps further emphasize Ulysse Nardin’s commitment to environmental responsibility, as they are crafted from 30% recycled rubber sourced from production waste.
With no dial, no hands, and no compromise on innovation, the Freak ONE OPS continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in watchmaking.
