What Does Your Watch Say About You?
You can tell a lot about a man from the watch he’s wearing. Or at least, that’s what we are told. But apart from distinguishing the neutrals from the fans, what do our horological friends reveal about our personalities. We take a look at a couple of watches filled with hints.
The storyteller
You’ve done your research. You’re not going to buy just any watch. It needs to carry some weight, some significance. Luckily, you’re spoilt for choice. There’s an icon for every brand. From the Omega Speedmaster, to the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso, and without forgetting about the Rolex Daytona, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak or the Patek Philippe Nautilus. That doesn’t mean you have to go with the original icon. You leave that to the vintage collector. You’re a modern man, and you want to impress your contemporaries. The sight of any icon commands respect within the watch collecting community, and admiration from the outside. Because, everyone can recognize an icon, even if they can’t all say what makes it iconic. And you love that.
The wild child
You’ve got a strong personality. You don’t want to wear a watch that a non-collector might recognize, and you may even rejoice at the opportunity of educating them about the timepiece on your wrist. Why is the MB&F HMX shaped the way it is? How can you tell the time on the Urwerk UR-105M Dark Knight? How can you possibly tell the time on any of these watches? You know the answer to these questions, and they empower you. Another thing, you’re not afraid of devaluation, at least when it comes to your watches. Which means you probably have enough in the bank to cover the purchase two or three times over.
The collector
You on the other hand, care a lot about the value of your watch, and you wish it were the main motivation behind your purchases. You wonder when you’ll see an Albino Daytona reappear at auction. Or if the Day-Date has done enough to prove its bankability. But the truth is, you are just as emotional as the rest of us, and out there are a number of timepieces you would happily sink more than what your financial advisor recommends. But that’s OK, because in your collection are a couple of timepieces that will make up for it. Hopefully…
The gem seeker
You’ve been very successful in life, and you’re not afraid to show it. You always go the extra mile. That Patek Philippe Nautilus Moonphase that is hard to get? You ask for the limited edition with a diamond bezel. Which means you’re likely to be one of the brand’s VIP customers. You’ve been with them for many years, and celebrate their milestones. So when Hublot’s Big Bang turned 10 years old, you were at the top of their guestlist and client list for the commemorative watch. Too fragile? You’ve got a dozen other watches to wear…
