Pantone Announces Greenery as the Color of the Year, Watch Brands Comply
It isn’t the easiest color to translate to fashion, let alone watches and jewelry, but for 2017 “Greenery” has been named the color of the year by Pantone – the people famous for naming color trends for decades. The question is, how will watch brands and jewelry companies interpret this lighter green, almost yellow-green, hue to the wrists, necks, ears and fingers?
Greenery
The Pantone Color Institute has deemed Pantone 15-0343 Greenery as the Color of the year. It is a fresh yellow-green shade that recalls spring, life and restored energy. In addition to being associated with nature and the environment, this color is also tied to innovation in technology thanks to its vivid modern appeal. The color is often used in conjunction with cool blues and complements a wide range of color palettes – emulating flowers in nature with lush green leaves. Recent fashion houses such as Kenzo, Michael Kors, Zac Posen and other have used the color in vibrant prints ready for 2017.
Watches and Jewelry
So, how do we expect it to be interpreted by watch brands? Granted over the years, the luxury brands such as Cartier, de Grisogono, Graff and others have embraced green – predominantly via the use of emeralds for amazing looks that steal the heart. Most stay in the emerald green family. De Grisogono, though, always the adventurer, paired the emerald set Allegra with lime green rubbers straps a few years ago for a dynamic look that remains in the Allegra line today.
A handful of luxury watch brands indulged in bold, bright green recently, including last year when Audemars Piguet unveiled its colorful Royal Oak Dive watch series, and Hublot showed off its Big Bang Tutti Frutti Apple green colored watch. Of course, HYT has gotten it right almost from the start of the brand, as it uses a spring green fluid in many of its watches to indicate the time.
This year, however, we expect to see a host of brands unveiling dials and straps in this color of spring. As is typical with Pantone colors, the trend usually emerges first in fashion watch brands and among the top designer names.
Hermes already has a stunning double-tour leafy green colored strap on its newest Cape Cod watches and it is only a matter of time before the rest show off their apple-green tints. We expect to see a lot of this trend at the upcoming global watch shows taking place in the months to come, and we will keep you informed.
