Omega Releases New Speedmaster Chronograph In Honor Of The First Omega In Space

Omega Moonwatch “The First OMEGA in Space” Chronograph

Not many brands can say they were there at the beginning of the space race. When America’s first astronauts reached towards the stars, many of them had Omega watches around their wrists. In October of 1962, astronaut Walter “Wally’ Schirra wore his own personal Speedmaster during the “Sigma 7” mission of the Mercury program. That simple act knitted together the histories of Omega and NASA, giving the watch brand a special place in the long and complicated history of space exploration. Now the watch that started it all, the Speedmaster Chronograph is receiving a retro throwback inspired by Wally Schirra’s original timepiece.

The Omega Speedmaster “First OMEGA in Space” Chronograph has an updated 18k Sedna™ gold case that’s  based on the original “pre-professional” Speedmaster, with symmetric lugs and a 1962 Seahorse medallion on the caseback. The face features a polished and richly-colored brown ceramic bezel ring and a matte chromium nitride tachymeter scale. The deep brown color is also present on the watch’s sub-dials and the minutes track that circles the opaline silvery dial. The watch’s hands and the applied indexes are crafted out of the same 18k gold as the case.

The caseback features some special engravings, including “The First Omega In Space.” To top off the homage to the classic original, the new watch is driven by the Omega Calibre 1861, the same movement that ticked inside the original “Moonwatch.”
